How Many Sump Pumps Should a Basement Have? One Sump Pump or Two?

The Number of Sump Pumps For Your Home

When Blue Umbrella Waterproofing installs an interior basement waterproofing system in New Jersey, one of the first questions we consider is: How many sump pumps should this basement have?

The typical industry approach to sizing a basement waterproofing system often focuses on the minimum number of sump pumps necessary for effective sealing and draining, but that is not how we do it.

We base how many sump pumps a basement should have on two factors:

  1. Linear footage
  2. The volume of water we expect the system to handle

Our goal is not to install as few sump pumps as possible. It’s to install a basement waterproofing system that can protect your New Jersey property when it matters most.

The Linear Foot Rule

First, we measure the perimeter of your NJ basement walls to determine the linear footage. This is the key metric because it indicates how far water must travel within the French drain pipe to reach a collection point. The longer the pipe, the more collection points the system needs to work efficiently.

As a general rule, here is how we size most systems:

Around 100 Linear Feet

This is the size of an average home or business we work on in New Jersey. In most cases, one sump basin and one heavy-duty pump are enough to handle the system efficiently. At this size, water can flow through the French drain to a single collection point without causing unnecessary pressure or delays.

Around 110 to 120 Linear Feet

Once a basement crosses this threshold, we strongly recommend adding a second basin and pump. At that point, water has to travel too far within the drainage pipe to efficiently reach a single collection point. During heavy rain or high groundwater conditions, that delay can create problems. Adding a second basin helps the system respond faster and keeps water moving before pressure builds under the floor.

Approaching or Exceeding 300 Linear Feet

For very large homes and commercial buildings, we often recommend three separate basins and three pumps. At that size, relying on one or even two collection points is not enough. Multiple basins help manage the water load across the full perimeter and ensure every part of the basement stays protected.

The Water Volume Exception

Even if your NJ basement is relatively small (say, 100 linear feet), the sheer volume of water you receive can override the linear-footage rule.

For example, if a homeowner or business owner in New Jersey tells us they get several feet of water in the basement during heavy storms, we would still recommend two basins, even with the smaller perimeter.

Why?

Because we want two collection points to handle that massive influx of water quickly during a heavy storm. This is why we do not size systems based on square footage alone. Water volume matters just as much.

Why Sump Pump Quality Matters

The number of sump pumps in your New Jersey basement matters, but so does the quality of the pump itself. The industry standard is a 1/2 horsepower pump to ensure the water is ejected quickly and reliably, especially during major New Jersey storms when the system is under the most pressure. A properly sized system with weak equipment is still a weak system, which is why we focus on both the right number of basins and the right pump strength. We install Blue Angel by Wayne Sump Pumps for the quality of build and the manufacturer warranty.

Sump Pumps Built for the Worst-Case Scenario

Ultimately, our goal is to install a basement waterproofing system that is strong enough to handle not just a rainy night, but  the worst-case scenario storm when you need real peace of mind.

We look at:

  • The size of your basement
  • The history of your water problems
  • How quickly water enters during storms
  • How much pressure is building around the foundation

From there, we determine the optimal number of basins and pumps your basement actually needs.
